There are several issues I run into when writing about critical topics in the public domain. One of the main contentions people have with my public participation in the political/intellectual sphere is they perceive critical engagement as “negativity.” Specifically, when I share my critical articles with people close to me (which is rarely ever now), there is definitely a backlash for my behavior. Most people don’t directly confront me about it, but they feel my engagement with cultural issues is “negative.” In fact, I had a close family member tell me I should “just be positive and everything will turn out fine.”
