Food And Chemical Companies Spent $63.6 Million In 2014 To Defeat GMO Labeling

Food and biotechnology companies spent $63.6 million in 2014 alone to oppose mandatory labeling of genetically modified food ingredients, or GMOs, according to a new analysis by EWG. The Grocery Manufacturers Association, for example, disclosed $5.8 million in lobbying expenditures around GMO labeling in 2014, “up sharply from $60,000 in 2013,” according to the analysis. PepsiCo nearly doubled the amount it spent, dedicating more than $4 million to the anti-labeling effort in 2014, up from 2.6 million in 2013. Other iconic companies that spent big in 2014 to deny consumers the right to know if their foods contain GMOs include Kellogg ($2.1 million), General Mills ($2.6 million) and Coca-Cola, which put up more than $9 million – the most of any food company, according to the report.

Cop Ruptures Man’s Spleen as Fellow Officers Take Pics and Laugh

Robert Liese was in jail for being unable to pay a $60 bar tab.

Orlando, FL — An Orlando cop has been arrested after surveillance video showed him violently kneeing a handcuffed man. But further investigation into the matter shows that his fellow officers were not only complicit in covering it up, but also sadistically laughed as the man lay bleeding internally in the cell.

Orlando police Officer Peter Delio was arrested in March and charged with felony battery after surveillance video showed him kneeing a handcuffed, Robert Liese, in the gut.

Several hours later Liese underwent emergency surgery to remove his spleen.

What happened between the initial blow to the stomach and the time the paramedics were notified is disturbing, to say the least.

Robert Liese was in jail after he says a friend left him with a $60 bar tab that he was unable to pay. Besides being drunk, not once did Liese ever pose a threat to officers. In fact, he peacefully offered Delio his hands to be brought to jail after knowing that he was not going to be able to pay.

But Liese says that Delio didn’t care that he was nice and then kicked the handcuffed man in the stomach as he was loading him into the squad car.

Once in jail, Liese headbutted the door because he was upset and injured, and he was trying to get the attention of someone besides the officers who were outside of the door ridiculing him.

Officer Delio, who apparently wanted to take out more frustrations on the restrained man, then walked into the cell and kneed him in the stomach so hard, that it ruptured his spleen.

The pain was so great that Liese was immobilized. Delio picks the man up like a ragdoll and laughably yells to Liese, “stop resisting.”

He could barely breathe, and he fell to the floor in agony. He was then picked up and dragged out of the cell to be placed in leg restraints.

During the two hours long video after Liese was struck by the officer, he begged for help.

Sgt. Michael Faulkner reported to internal affairs that Liese not only didn’t ask for medical attention, but that he refused it.

Unlike Sgt. Faulkner, however, the video does not lie. Not five, not ten, but at least twenty times Liese can be heard on video begging for medical attention.

“I need medical attention, please,” Liese said.

“What do you need medical attention for?” Faulkner asked.

“I have to lay down, please. I want to lay down,” Liese said. “My chest.”

“What’s wrong?” Faulkner asked Liese.

“I can’t breathe right,” Liese said.

But the sadistic Faulkner did not render aid, nor did he call paramedics; instead, he took cell phone pics of the injured man.

According to WFTV, Faulkner told internal affairs investigators that he was investigating Delio’s use of force. But the video shows Liese is the one who brought it up and Faulkner never asked about it.

“I got kicked in the chest in the backseat of the car,” Liese said.

Crucial minutes past that could have led to the death of Liese. During this time, the officers can be heard on the surveillance video laughing and joking about the man who lay dying just a few feet away.

“Somebody, please call the – paramedics,” Liese said suffering as the laughter continued.

Finally after nearly two hours, paramedics arrived, and Liese’s life was saved.

Once again, heroes are exposed for villains, thanks to the power of the camera lens. Luckily no lives were lost due to these criminal actions.

Kilgore's deputy wrote that it "firmly established in the public mind, including millions who never had read The Wall Street Journal, and presumably never would, that here was a newspaper of unshakable independence and integrity. GM had done us a priceless favor." David Lilienthal, former Tennessee Valley Authority and Atomic Energy Commission chairman, wrote Kilgore that it was "a classic in the history of newspapering." Author Edward Scharff later concluded that this "new-won reputation was worth inestimably more than the General Motors advertising account." Donald MacDonald, then a junior ad salesman but later head of all sales for the Journal and Dow Jones, summed up the implications simply: "Our future was assured.""

The Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Death of the Republic | WEB OF DEBT BLOG: Something else besides attracting investment money and encouraging foreign trade seems to be going on. The TPP would destroy our republican form of government under the rule of law, by elevating the rights of investors – also called the rights of “capital” – above the rights of the citizens.

That means that TPP is blatantly unconstitutional. But as Joe Firestone observes, neo-liberalism and corporate contributions seem to have blinded the deal’s proponents so much that they cannot see they are selling out the sovereignty of the United States to foreign and multinational corporations.

Hey Mr. President: Transparency Applies to the TPP, Too

Do you want media that's accountable to YOU, not to corporate sponsors? Help publish journalism with real integrity and independence - donate to Truthout!

Transparency belongs in all parts of a democracy.

This morning, President Obama announced that back in January we accidentally killed two hostages, including one US citizen, with a drone during a counterterrorism operation targeting al-Qaeda operatives in a compound along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

The hostages, American Warren Weinstein and Italian Giovanni Lo Porto, were apparently in the compound when it was hit by the drone strike.

See more news and opinion from Thom Hartmann at Truthout here.

Officials are saying that they had no idea Weinstein and Lo Porto were in the compound at the time of the attack.

The strike also killed two US-born al-Qaeda operatives, Adam Gadahn and Ahmed Farouq.

Speaking about the tragic deaths of Weinstein and Lo Porto, President Obama said that, "As president and as Commander-in-Chief, I take full responsibility for all our counterterrorism operations including the one that inadvertently took the lives of Warren and Giovanni."

The president then talked about why the government had chosen to make the operation and its tragic results public.

He said that, "As soon as we determined the cause of their deaths, I directed that the existence of this operation be declassified and disclosed publicly. I did so because the Weinstein and Lo Porto families deserved to know the truth. And I did so because, even as certain aspects of our national security efforts have to remain secret in order to succeed, the United States is a democracy, committed to openness in good times and in bad."

President Obama is absolutely right. The United States is a democracy, and transparency is an absolutely necessary prerequisite for a democracy to properly function.

But when it comes to transparency you can't play pick and choose.

You can't be transparent about a counterterrorism operation that went horribly wrong, but then be incredibly secretive about something like... the TPP.

Earlier this week, President Obama was interviewed by Chris Matthews. One of the major topics of that discussion was the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

In his interview with Matthews, President Obama continued to tout the TPP, saying that he wouldn't promote something that would hurt our economy and hurt working-class Americans.

President Obama also called out TPP opponents like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, saying that she and others are wrong about the facts of the deal.

But here's the problem. It's hard to know who's right or wrong about the facts of the TPP because it's been negotiated largely in secret behind closed doors.

Any information we do have about it is from leaks, and there is still a great deal we don't know about the agreement.

In a statement on her website, Senator Warren responded to the president, saying that, "The government doesn't want you to read this massive new trade agreement. It's top secret. Why? Here's the real answer people have given me: 'We can't make this deal public because if the American people saw what was in it, they would be opposed to it.'"

Senator Warren went on to say that, "If the American people would be opposed to a trade agreement if they saw it, then that agreement should not become the law of the United States."

So, what do we know about the TPP?

Well, according to Public Citizen, we know that the TPP could ship millions of good-paying US jobs overseas.

We know that the TPP could increase the costs of health care and medicine, while hurting health and safety standards.

And we know that the TPP could make corporations even stronger and undo what few reforms are left on Wall Street.

And we know that the Republicans, Wall Street and lots of transnational corporations are salivating at getting the TPP - also known as the Southern Hemisphere Asian Free Trade Agreement (SHAFTA) - passed.

Maybe President Obama is right. Maybe unlike every other so-called free trade we've signed on to, the TPP will actually help working-class Americans and help our economy get back on track.

But, we can't possibly know that without seeing the full agreement in writing, and without giving Congress the right to debate and amend it.

That's why I've let my elected officials know that I'm strongly opposed to the "Fast-Track" bill that's currently before Congress, that would take away from Congress the power to debate or amend this trade agreement. As citizens of a free country, we deserve transparency and debate. It's that simple.

This study has empirically demonstrated an association between more widespread exposure to fluoridated water and increased ADHD prevalence in U.S. children and adolescents.

PMID:  Environ Health. 2015 ;14(1):17. Epub 2015 Feb 27. PMID: 25890329 Abstract Title:  Exposure to fluoridated water and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder prevalence among children and adolescents in the United States: an ecological association. Abstract:  BACKGROUND: Epidemiological and animal-based studies have suggested that prenatal and postnatal fluoride exposure has adverse effects on neurodevelopment. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between exposure to fluoridated water and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) prevalence among children and adolescents in the United States. METHODS: Data on ADHD prevalence among 4-17 year olds collected in 2003, 2007 and 2011 as part of the National Survey of Children's Health, and state water fluoridation prevalence from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collected between 1992 and 2008 were utilized. RESULTS: State prevalence of artificial water fluoridation in 1992 significantly positively predicted state prevalence of ADHD in 2003, 2007 and 2011, even after controlling for socioeconomic status. A multivariate regression analysis showed that after socioeconomic status was controlled each 1% increase in artificial fluoridation prevalence in 1992 was associated with approximately 67,000 to 131,000 additional ADHD diagnoses from 2003 to 2011. Overall state water fluoridation prevalence (not distinguishing between fluoridation types) was also significantly positively correlated with state prevalence of ADHD for all but one year examined. CONCLUSIONS: Parents reported higher rates of medically-diagnosed ADHD in their children in states in which a greater proportion of people receive fluoridated water from public water supplies. The relationship between fluoride exposure and ADHD warrants future study.

How Can Homeopathy Be Both a Useless Placebo and Dangerous at the Same Time?

The FDA wrapped up a two-day hearing this week on whether or not homeopathic remedies should be regulated like drugs. Listening to critics of homeopathy try to justify why they don't think the American public should have free access to homeopathic remedies leaves one wondering just what the real motivation is behind these criticisms. The two dominant criticisms made against homeopathic remedies are antithetical to each other. Critics complain that due to a lack of regulation homeopathic remedies are dangerous, but then they turn around and say that homeopathic remedies are simply useless sugar pills with no therapeutic effect whatsoever, and no better than a placebo. Both cannot be true. Is this the new standard of scientific scrutiny that federal agencies are using to supposedly protect the public? The FDA is clearly not concerned about homeopathic remedies because they are a danger to the public. There are no deaths associated with homeopathic remedies, and very few side effects. By contrast, FDA-approved drugs have millions of adverse side effects, including over 100,000 deaths each year. Homeopathic remedies are a danger to the FDA's monopoly on drugs, and so they clearly want to either eliminate the competition, or get in on the action and take over the market.

Glyphosate Is Spreading Like A Cancer Across The U.S.

American growers sprayed 280 million pounds of glyphosate on their crops in 2012, according to U.S. Geological Survey data. That amounts to nearly a pound of glyphosate for every person in the country. The use of glyphosate on farmland has skyrocketed since the mid-1990s, when biotech companies introduced genetically engineered crop varieties (often called GMOs) that can withstand being blasted with glyphosate. Since then, agricultural use of the herbicide has increased 16-fold. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup, Monsanto’s widely used weed killer, which according to the World Health Organization is “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

Proof: Pertussis vaccine causes illness | Natural Health 365

Proof: Pertussis vaccine causes illness | Natural Health 365: "The truth is that the medical community has known about the pertussis vaccine dangers since at least 2010. One study done in California after a whooping cough outbreak there showed that 81 percent of whooping cough cases in children occurred in those who had received the pertussis vaccine; only eight percent of the infected persons had not been vaccinated.
The study also showed that infection rates markedly increased after three years of receiving the vaccine.
This study, as well as the current Park City outbreak, are more than enough evidence that the pertussis vaccine is not only ineffective, but that is seems to be causing more cases of the illness. However, instead of renewing their explorations into the truth, medical professionals are characterizing these developments as a “good reminder to keep kids up to date on immunizations.”"
