The single most-overlooked and under-appreciated aspect of our society is the fact that immensely powerful people are continuously working to manipulate the thoughts we think about the world.

For over the past two months, an avalanche of stories have hit Western mainstream press which purported to document instances of mass rape carried out by Russian troops against Ukrainian civilians. One particular story in Time took off, driving outrage and condemnation by Western officials and receiving repeat coverage on CNN and other major US networks.
It alleged "a systemic, coordinated campaign of sexual violence" - relying chiefly on testimony gathered by Ukraine's appointed top human rights representative. It included a particularly shocking story of 25 teenage girls being gang-raped by Russian troops - nine of which became pregnant. According to the report:
Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, Lyudmyla Denisova said that 25 teenage girls were kept in a basement in Bucha and gang-raped; nine of them are now pregnant. Elderly women spoke on camera about being raped by Russian soldiers. The bodies of children were found naked with their hands tied behind their backs, their genitals mutilated. Those victims included both girls and boys...
Ukrainians are speaking up about rape as a war crime to ensure the world holds Russia accountablehttps://t.co/tEilTSgmbS
— TIME (@TIME) April 24, 2022
As has been the pattern in prior wars, whether in Syria or Libya, the media claims got more and more sensational and over-the-top as the conflict intensified, and as Western powers became more deeply involved, yet with no concrete or definitive proof.
But one consistent detail in the majority of the stories is that the aforementioned Ukraine human rights ombudsman, Lyudmyla Denisova, is often the central figure feeding Western correspondents the shocking rape stories.
For example, she's featured in this April Newsweek piece:
Lyudmila Denisova, the Ukrainian Parliament's Commissioner for Human Rights, alleged on Friday that Russian soldiers have raped children during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
In a Facebook post, Denisova alleged that an 11-year-old boy was raped by Russians in front of his mother who was tied to a chair and forced to watch as it happened in the Ukrainian city of Bucha.
Many such stories which presented ever-more horrifying details as the war progressed quickly went viral, particularly among pro-Ukraine activists on Twitter and other social media, to the point where prominent pundits would begin casually agreeing amongst themself that Russians simply are "animals".
And below is another example among many, which tended to be based on "reports say" for many of the most central, damning claims...
But recently, within the last couple of weeks, as investigators began to dig deeper into the allegations, it seems the media stories started to dry up. The geopolitical analysis blog Moon of Alabama details what happened in the following:
However, a bunch of eager NGOs in Ukraine, hoping for fresh 'western' money for new 'rape consultation and recovery' projects, tried to find real rape cases. They were disappointed when they found that there was no evidence that any rape had taken place
(machine translation):
On May 25, a number of media outlets and NGOs published an open appeal to Lyudmila Denisova calling for improved communication on sexual crimes during the war.The signatories insist that Denisova should disclose only information about which there is sufficient evidence, avoid sensationalism and excessive detail in their reports, use correct terminology and take care of the confidentiality and safety of victims.
"Sexual crimes during the war are family tragedies, a difficult traumatic topic, not a topic for publications in the spirit of the 'scandalous chronicle.' We need to keep in mind the goal: to draw attention to the facts of crimes," the appeal reads.
An entire global activist movement even sprang up which focused on highlighting Russian sexual crimes in Ukraine, based on the premise that Russia's military is using "rape as a tool" as part of its arsenal to spread a campaign of terror...
Th woman also shouted 'Don't rape us!' as the security encircled her quickly to take her off the red carpet. The incident again brought to light the Ukraine crisis at #Cannes.https://t.co/Ghs9UCKC7q
— WION (@WIONews) May 21, 2022
And now on Tuesday, Interfax, Politico, The Wall Street Journal, and others are reporting that Lyudmyla Denisova has been fired - precisely for floating and perpetuating fantastical claims of mass rape but without providing evidence...
Ukraine's parliament just fired human rights ombudsman Lyudmila Denisova. MPs claimed her work focusing on the rape of Ukrainians by Russian troops which "couldn't be confirmed with evidence [...] only harmed Ukraine and distracted the global media from Ukraine's real needs."
— Christopher Miller (@ChristopherJM) May 31, 2022
"Ukrainian lawmakers dismissed the country’s ombudsman for human rights, Lyudmyla Denisova, in a no-confidence vote on Tuesday, concluding that she had failed to fulfill obligations including the facilitation of humanitarian corridors and countering the deportation of Ukrainians from occupied territory," The Wall Street Journal reported late in the day.
"Lawmaker Pavlo Frolov said Ms. Denisova was also accused of making insensitive and unverifiable statements about alleged Russian sex crimes and spending too much time in Western Europe during the invasion," the report added.
Frolov said in a Facebook post announcing her dismissal as the country's top human rights investigator:
"The unclear focus of the Ombudsman's media work on the numerous details of ‘sexual crimes committed in an unnatural way’ and ‘rape of children’ in the occupied territories that could not be confirmed by evidence, only harmed Ukraine."
Such accusations of mass rape by the enemy de jour are made in every war (Libya, Syria) . They rarely turn out to be true.https://t.co/bF0NVhQiFl https://t.co/i4rE2LMZMV
— Moon of Alabama (@MoonofA) April 21, 2022
Needless to say this is an absolutely devastating blow to Ukraine's 'information war' which has been in full force since the Russian invasion (as naturally in war each side will enter into propaganda campaigns against the other simultaneous to the actual ground war, and while seeking to sway world opinion).
Angry pushback has started already within hours after the news of Denisova's removal was confirmed, including from UN accounts and US media pundits...
Dismissal of Ombudsperson Denisova is contrary to int standards, undermines independence of important human rights institution in #Ukraine. We call on authorities to take steps to ensure independence of Ombudsperson & abide by int standards in law&practice https://t.co/C3689VYRih
— UNHumanRightsUkraine (@UNHumanRightsUA) May 31, 2022
That Ukraine's parliament took the drastic step of dismissing her in such a public manner also speaks volumes - strongly suggesting that Ukrainian officials themselves don't believe the bulk of the 'systematic rape' claims.
If you've ever heard the unmistakable stall indicator in the cockpit of an aircraft when drag exceeds lift – something my flight instructor made me experience often when taking flying lessons – it never fails to get your attention. Manage to tune out such a clear and present danger warning and it will not end well for you or your passengers.
America's "stall indicator" is blaring – and we would do well to act. Immediately.
Christian philosopher Francis Schaeffer cautioned that "relativism" would facilitate the destruction of Western civilization as far back as the mid 1960s. Schaeffer recognized the early stall warning and attempted to sound the alarm with every fiber in his being.
Oblivious in a purple haze of so-called enlightened ideals, we've become the first generation of Americans no longer tethered to even the most basic mooring post of truth. Timeless truths that were once universally accepted as building blocks of civilized societies have been reduced to little more than "social constructs" created by narrow-minded people who "cling to their guns and Bibles" and outdated Judeo-Christian values.
In the intellectually dishonest process, we've become the first American generation of unapologetic hedonists: vulgar, proud and arrogant, marching in the streets while the rest of us hide the kids.
Nowhere is the stall warning more evident than in the increasingly confusing "brave" new world of gender dysphoria. Watch the trailer for Matt Walsh's upcoming documentary, "What is a Woman?" if you have remaining doubts.
Occam's Razor asserts, "The simplest answer is usually the right one." For those of us who don't want to overthink modernity's preposterously circuitous gender riddle, the simplest answer is: "He created them male and female and blessed them" (Genesis 5:2)
Thankfully, both Scripture and biology align perfectly on the topic.
Biologically speaking, gender is not difficult to figure out. Honest gay people will tell you as much. Anything beyond this profound gender reality is another intentional diversion from both creation and science and carries with it profound risks, particularly for our children.
Last week the Biden administration made it clear that he does not want your children's school to enjoy federal funding for lunch programs unless it openly permits biological boys in girls' bathrooms and locker rooms. Another stall warning.
Living in the values-free zone of modern America, we've had to reimagine not just the roles of gender and the family but just about everything in our ever-mutating, arbitrary values system. It's become chaotic and brutish.
Don't think it's been easy for my generation to disregard thousands of years of cultural norms and create its own social structure and moral code from the ground up. It was a monumental undertaking with countless perfectly natural barriers we had to blow up along the way. The audacity of false hope in my "free love" generation was impressive.
Failing to appreciate the deadly, gravity-like cause and effect of abandoning God's most basic laws, we found it necessary to fix blame on this group or that group when our Woodstock "utopia" – good music but lots of mud, dysentery, sexually transmitted disease, not enough drinking water, food, blankets, or bathrooms – continually eluded us.
Given the level of cognitive dissonance purposefully seeded by "progressive" social engineers, groupthink reasons that problems resulting from our own errant behaviors must surely be someone else's fault. As a result, finger-pointing and political differences have divided us to unimaginable levels – many now say worse than pre-Civil War days.
It goes without saying that we should prepare to face warlike consequence in our new relativistic culture of division and contempt, as some are deemed worthy to pull into a gas station, eat in a public restaurant or go to a movie theater, while others are not at all worthy or "welcomed anytime, anywhere," as inanely shouted by a sitting member of Congress.
I live near the battlefields of Franklin, Tennessee, which are now picturesque rolling hills with wooden fences. But they were once ankle deep with the blood of our countrymen divided against each other, my relatives from the North fighting to reunite the states against slavery just as innocent rank-and-file young men from the South were forced to fight a war they had nothing to do with.
The bloodshed is unthinkable today as we sit in coffee shops and eateries close to where so many lost their lives. Of course, the terrifying difference in the new civil war that's brewing is the lack of clearly defined territorial lines.
But division is an age-old military strategy enemies at home and abroad are delighting in. To deadly effect, America's cultural fault lines are becoming less bridgeable with each passing year.
Those engaged in such divisive "gender and racial identity" politics initially thought they could control the destructive practice around election cycles, kind of like lighting a fire in a fire pit then dousing it out until the next fire was useful. However, the highly emotional fires they've stoked are raging out of control and consuming our children.
God "hates division."
So, as if to hasten their own eternal demise, the hegemonic elite have found it politically useful to pit brother against brother, race against race, innumerable "gender" against gender, class against class, restaurant patron against restaurant patron, American against American. In such a moment of political desperation, they'll undoubtedly think of additional ways to divide and conquer.
To the cultural elite so deeply vested in the politics of division and relativism it's become like holding a wolf by its ears – you may not like it anymore, but you dare not let go now.
America's "stall warning" is screaming at us to pull up, and there is precious little time left to act.
We can correct America's death spiral at the next election – think of pulling the switch for responsible leaders as pulling up the yoke and saving your family from certain destruction. It may well be your last opportunity to heed the unmistakable stall warning for the sake of your children.
Spread the warning like your life depends on it.

Despite its lies about the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its cover-up of the pandemic's origin, China has been elected to the World Health Organization's executive board.
U.N. Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer, executive director of the non-profit U.N. Watch, noted China's election last Friday at the conclusion of the World Health Assembly apparently received no objections from member nations, Breitbart News reported.
"This is the regime that crushed those in Wuhan like Dr. Li Wenliang who courageously tried to warn the world about the coronavirus," he wrote on Twitter.
Li was the whistleblower in Wuhan, China, who was interrogated by police after he tried to warn his colleagues about the rapid spread in his city of a SARS-like respiratory disease. Wuhan police publicly censured him and seven other doctors on Jan. 3, 2020, for "making false comments on the Internet about unconfirmed SARS outbreak." Days later he contracted COVID-19. And on Feb. 7, 2020, one week after publicizing his experience with police on social media, he died at age 33.
Columnist Ross Clark wrote in the British magazine The Spectator that WHO's executive board is "stuffed with small countries, many with lousy human rights records, which will not dare to challenge China or which will not have the political clout to do so."
The election of China is further evidence WHO has "lost all credibility."
China was among 12 nations elected to the 34-member board last Friday. The others were Brazil, Canada, Ethiopia, Maldives, Micronesia, Morocco, Moldova, the United States, Senegal, Slovakia and Yemen.

As WND reported, the Biden administration submitted 13 amendments to the International Health Regulations for a vote this week by the World Health Assembly in Geneva. Amid an awareness campaign led by Dr. Peter Breggin, former Congress member Michele Bachmann and others, 12 of the amendments were withdrawn before the vote.
However, the measures in the amendments – which critics argue effectively cede sovereignty over health care from individual nations to the U.N. agency – inevitably will be part of a pandemic treaty the WHO is preparing for completion by 2024.
In December, the WHO announced that its World Health Assembly Special Session decided to establish an intergovernmental negotiating body "to draft and negotiate a WHO convention, agreement or other international instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness."
EDITOR'S NOTE: Last year, America's doctors, nurses and paramedics were celebrated as frontline heroes battling a fearsome new pandemic. Today, under Joe Biden, tens of thousands of these same heroes are denounced as rebels, conspiracy theorists, extremists and potential terrorists. Along with massive numbers of police, firemen, Border Patrol agents, Navy SEALs, pilots, air-traffic controllers, and countless other truly essential Americans, they're all considered so dangerous as to merit termination, their professional and personal lives turned upside down due to their decision not to be injected with the experimental COVID vaccines. Biden's tyrannical mandate threatens to cripple American society – from law enforcement to airlines to commercial supply chains to hospitals. It's already happening. But the good news is that huge numbers of "yesterday's heroes" are now fighting back – bravely and boldly. The whole epic showdown is laid out as never before in the sensational October issue of WND's monthly Whistleblower magazine, titled "THE GREAT AMERICAN REBELLION: 'We will not comply!' COVID-19 power grab ignites bold new era of national defiance."

Joe Rogan heavily criticized calls to ban guns in the wake of last week’s tragic school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
On Thursday’s episode of his Spotify podcast, Rogan said that if the government moved to take away firearms, “only criminals” would have guns.
Rogan upheld his resistance to gun control even after a lone gunman killed 19 students and two teachers last week in one of the worst mass shootings in the last decade.
“It’s like, how do you stop that? No one knows how to stop that,” he said. The conversation was being held between himself and guest Lex Fridman.
“What is the answer? Is the answer to take everyone’s guns? Well, they’re not gonna give their guns up. Only criminals are gonna have guns. It’s not gonna be a good situation.”
He noted that if the government were to “take all the guns away from people and give all the power to the government,” it would be a very bad thing.
“We see how they are with an armed populace; they still have a tendency towards totalitarianism. And the more increased power and control you have over people, the easier it is for them to do what they do.”
Rogan said he wasn’t surprised by the call to take away guns or at least increase control over them. He said, “when you’re a person in power, to try to hold more power and acquire more power.”

We are supposed to believe that what we are witnessing is just one “tragic accident” after another. We aren’t supposed to see any sort of a pattern, and we aren’t supposed to ask any questions. Last month, I wrote an article about 16 mysterious fires that have happened at important food industry facilities in the United States since the start of 2022. Unfortunately, this trend has continued since that time. In fact, there have been more “accidental fires” in recent days, and I believe that the American people deserve some answers.
On Saturday night, a “massive” fire erupted at a commercial egg farm in Minnesota.
We are being told that the structure that burned down contained “tens of thousands of chickens”…
Massive flames burned down a barn with tens of thousands of chickens in Wright County.
The fire started late Saturday night at Forsman Farms in Howard Lake, causing major damage.
Like so many of the other mysterious fires that I have reported on, this fire grew to an absolutely enormous size very, very rapidly…
The Trebesch family thought they would spend Saturday night around their bonfire, but just after 10 p.m. they noticed massive flames across the field at Forsman Farms.
“It was unbelievable how quick it grew, it was insane,” Andy Trebesch said. “It was the whole sky, it was quite large.”
We are being told that there was no foul play.
Just another senseless accident.
Nothing to see here.
Of course the same explanation is being given for a “dramatic fireball” that burned a grain silo to the ground in Washington state just a few days ago…
A spectacular fire demolished M & E Seed and Grain Co. in Prosser and left one person with burns.
A smoldering pile of twisted metal and charred lumber was all that remained Thursday morning after firefighters battled the blaze in downtown Prosser all night.
A few firefighters remained at the scene to monitor the fire.
They are assuring us that this sort of thing happens all the time.
So don’t try to apply common sense to any of this, because that will just confuse you.
A few days before that tragedy in Washington state, 43 rail cars that were carrying much needed potash derailed in Alberta…
About 43 westbound Canadian Pacific (CP) Rail cars carrying potash derailed northeast of Fort Macleod, Alta., Sunday morning, RCMP say.
At 8:15 a.m., Mounties responded to a train derailment between Range Roads 251 and 252, near Highway 3. Fire crews and CP Rail also came to the scene, according to police.
So what are Canadian authorities telling us about this incident?
You guessed it!
Apparently it was just another “accident”.

People sure are getting careless these days, because “accidents” just keep happening time after time after time.
And all of this is taking place at a moment in history when we are being told that we are about to enter an absolutely horrifying global food crisis.
During recent testimony in front of the UN Security Council, the CEO of Gro Intelligence warned that “the lowest grain inventory levels the world has ever seen” are getting even lower…
Menker said estimates from official government agencies from across the world show that wheat inventories at 33% of annual consumption, but added that models created by Gro Intelligence show that the figure may actually be closer to 20%, a level not seen since 2007 and 2008.
“It is important to note that the lowest grain inventory levels the world has ever seen are now occurring while access to fertilizers is highly constrained,” she said. “And drought in wheat growing regions around the world is the most extreme it’s been in over 20 years. Similar inventory concerns also apply to corn and other grains.”
In other words, there isn’t going to be enough food for everyone.
As I noted yesterday, we are being told that one-fifth of the entire population of the globe could soon descend into poverty and hunger…
For months, the specter of a global hunger crisis has been looming. The war in Ukraine is a compounding factor, blocking key value chains for food and fertilizer just as the world reckons with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on global hunger.
Add the pervasive effects of climate change to the mix, and the result is what the United Nations is calling a “perfect storm” that risks one-fifth of the global population – as many as 1.7 billion people – falling into poverty and hunger.
I am not the one saying that one-fifth of the global population is heading into poverty and hunger.
It is the United Nations that is saying this.
Of course it is quite true that I have been warning that a “global famine” was coming for a very long time, and now it is here.
David Beasley, the head of the UN World Food Program, says that his organization is already taking food away from the hungry to feed the starving.
So what is he going to do when countless millions are starving all over the planet?
Global trends have been pushing us in this direction for years, but now the events of 2022 have greatly accelerated the development of the “perfect storm” that we are now facing.
We are being told that things will be far worse by the end of 2022 than they are now, and you probably don’t even want to hear about what the outlook for 2023 looks like.
You can try to ignore this growing crisis if you want, but it is not going away.
A nightmare of epic proportions has begun. Unfortunately, this is a nightmare that is not going to end any time soon.

Broward County (Florida) Public Schools’ district has been accused by a parents advocacy group of instructing staff to promote transgenderism to children, and then to hide from parents any requests students have to ‘transition’.
The Parents Defending Education group points to a document that the school distributed to teachers called the “Broward County Public Schools LGBTQ Critical Support Guide”.
The manual states that for children in grades 6 through 12 grades before notifying “any parent or guardian regarding the transition process, school staff should work closely with the student to assess the degree to which, if any, the parent(s) or guardian will be involved in the process and must carefully consider the health, well-being and safety of the transitioning student.”
The document also states that teachers and officials should use a “Gender Support and Transition Planning Guide” to determine “when and how this [transition] is communicated to students and their parent(s)/guardian.”
It also outlines that staff must not use gendered terms like ‘girls and boys’, and must use preferred pronouns and “affirmed first name[s],” which will be entered into the District’s Student Information System.
The document also says that students identifying as the opposite gender will “have access to the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity asserted at school,” and that on field trips “[i]f students are to be separated based on gender, the transgender student should be allowed to room with peers that match their gender identity.”
The guide also claims that “The expression of transgender identity, or any other form of gender-expansive behavior, is a healthy, appropriate and typical aspect of human development.”
In a statement, Parents Defending Education asserted that “Broward County school officials must not be aware that gender dysphoria is listed in the DSM-5 since they have declared in an official and public document that the expression of transgender identity is healthy, appropriate and typical. Add to that their recommendation that children transition over the summer and their promise to deceive parents, and their position is indefensible and flies in the face of the promise to do no harm.”
The development comes in the wake of the Biden Administration’s Education Secretary refusing to answer a question during a Senate hearing on whether school districts should keep a child’s involvement in gender transition a secret from parents:
When pushed, @SecCardona reveals that he does in fact support withholding information from parents about their child's gender transition.
He also implies that parents who don't "affirm" that gender identity aren't safe and it's the schools job to affirm it and hide it. https://t.co/gid5EXvFt4

Cardona also suggested that biological boys should be allowed to compete against girls in sports, and even accused his questioner, GOP Congressman Jim Banks, of wanting to exclude children by discussing their biological gender.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) raised the travel alert for monkeypox.
A monkeypox outbreak that has resulted in hundreds of cases in more than 20 countries prompted the CDC to move its travel advisory from ‘Level 1’ to ‘Level 2’
‘Level 2’ alert advises people to practice enhanced precautions, such as avoiding sick people, including those with skin lesions.
The CDC advised travelers to avoid contact with dead or live wild animals, including monkeys and rodents.
Travelers should also avoid eating bushmeat (wild game).
The highest alert is ‘Level 3’ which advises people to avoid nonessential travel.
Health officials confirmed last Wednesday the first case of monkeypox virus infection in Massachusetts this year.
The CDC expressed concern last Tuesday about the monkeypox outbreak in the UK and warned of the possibility that the outbreak could spread beyond U.K. borders.
Forbes reported:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has just presented some next level stuff when it comes to traveling during the current monkeypox outbreak. The outbreak, which has already resulted in over 200 confirmed and over 100 suspected cases in over 20 different countries has prompted the CDC to move its travel advisory from Level 1 to Level 2. Level 2 is the “Alert” level, corresponding to “Practice Enhanced Precautions.” Level 1 was the “Watch” level, which simply meant “Practice Usual Precautions.”
The CDC has a total of three possible levels when it comes to monkeypox travel advisories. The highest level would be Level 3, which is the the “Warning” level and corresponds to “Avoid Nonessential Travel.” Clearly, like golf scores and the number of times a marmot hits you in the groin with a golf club, the higher the number, the worse things are. While Level 2 does not really restrict where you can travel, as the name of the level implies, it does mean that you should be alerted to practice some “enhanced precautions.”

Apparently, it’s really difficult for our ONS to produce deaths by date of occurrence by sex and age until 7 months after year end. This means we won’t get any reliable death data for 2021 until July this year.
Fortunately, Australia is a little more timely with their data releases so we can get a little insight from down under.
Looking at both sexes and all ages, it is clear that things have gone really wrong for Australia since the week ending 11th April 2021. Between then and the end of Feb 2022, there have been 16k excess deaths.
There have been less than 4k COVID deaths in that same time with most of those coming since Sept 2021.
So, much like every other country of the world, Australia has had more COVID death since the COVID vaccine was introduced in Feb 2021 and substantially more excess death from other causes.
By the end of the period, more than 90% of the adult population has been jabbed.
What if we break it down by sex and age?
In the over 75s, the pattern is quite consistent, regardless of sex. There was modest excess death during 2020, the year of the plague, followed by significant excess starting exactly on 11th April 2021, just under two months after the mass COVID vaccinations began.
In the 65 to 74 year olds, the men have been dying at a steady excess pace since the start of 2020 with no obvious inflection like the older age groups. The women, on the other hand, were dying at a slightly slower pace but caught up after an inflection on 25th April 2021, two weeks after the older age groups.
Things to start to get interesting in the 45 to 64 year olds. The men have been dying less than expected since the start of 2020 but stop their decline when vaccination starts and rally in early September 2021.
Conversely, the women seemed to have a little spike Feb to May 2020 when COVID was pandemic before also declining in the run up to mass vaccination. But the biggest anomaly is that their death rally starts on 18th April, 1 week after the oldest groups but 1 week before the 65 to 74s and a massive 5 months before the men.
I’m not normally one to speculate, but in the absence of any better quality data from the expert public health authorities, I’m going to have a stab at an explanation – there are substantially more female health care workers, especially in care homes, who would have been “prioritised” over their male peers which is why they die from the jab sooner.
I could be wrong.

In February 2021, by order of President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine shut down three domestic television channels, accusing them of spreading Russian “propaganda.” Three months later, Zelenksky arrested Viktor Medvedchuk, who was at the time leading the second-biggest party in Ukraine’s national parliament, the pro-Russia and Eurosceptic Opposition Platform for Life (OPZZh).
Zelensky didn’t have trouble incinerating vaunted democratic norms well-before Russia crossed the Rubicon into Ukraine this year. So it was no surprise when he did it again amid the war in late March, invoking emergency powers under martial law to nationalize TV channels and ban 11 opposition parties, including OPZZh — all supposedly done in the name of combatting Russian misinformation and Russian sympathizers, even though OPZZh’s then-chairman, Yuriy Boyko, denounced the war and called for a ceasefire and the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. Zelensky, however, wouldn’t miss another opportunity to clip the wings of political opposition in his country, certainly not now that Western media rationalizes and glorifies his every move.
But the portrait of the Ukraine President as a democratic paragon whitewashes the real Zelensky and conceals a vast web of corruption and international skullduggery of which Ukraine is situated in the centre. Understanding the real Zelensky, requires seeing him as a creation of Ukrainian oligarch Ihor Kolomoisky. He is, in truth, a puppet of intrigue.
The Pandora Papers
It might be hard to believe now, but revelations from documents in the Pandora Papers — millions of files from offshore service providers leaked to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and shared with partners around the world — sent Zelensky reeling last year, threatening to end his political career. Though the actor-turned-politico campaigned as an anti-corruption reformer, the Pandora Papers showed him to be just as crooked as his predecessors.
Of more than 300 politicians and public officials, including several current and former national leaders, in more than 91 countries and territories to whom the documents were linked, Ukraine was home to more secret offshore holdings than any other, including Russia. The Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which contributed to the investigation, found that just before Zelensky was elected president, “he gifted his stake in a key offshore company, the British Virgin Islands-registered Maltex Multicapital Corp., to his business partner — soon to be his top presidential aide. And in spite of giving up his shares, the documents show that an arrangement was soon made that would allow the offshore to keep paying dividends to a company that now belongs to his wife.”
As it was with crackdowns on free speech and political opposition, Zelensky’s office attempted to justify the use of offshores by blaming the specter of Russian aggression. An adviser to Zelensky’s chief of staff said the offshores were necessary to “protect” the group’s incomes against the “aggressive actions” of the “corrupt” regime of former President Viktor Yanukovych, who was ousted in a US-backed color revolution in 2014. The expensive properties acquired by Zelensky associates in the center of London with the offshores, it seems, were but humble havens for persecuted Ukrainians.
It was true that Zelensky and his partners in a television production company, Kvartal 95, set up a network of offshore firms dating back to at least 2012. That was also the year the company began producing regular content for TV stations owned by Kolomoisky, Ukraine’s most flamboyant oligarch and Zelensky’s key backer.
The Raider
Kolomoisky is known to have intimidated guests by feeding a live shark he kept in a huge aquarium at his Dnipropetrovsk office, and has even reportedly ordered contract killings. If he did not exist, Richard Marcinko would likely have invented him as a villain in one of his Rogue Warrior novels.
Kolomoisky co-founded and was until 2016 the main owner of PrivatBank, Ukraine’s largest commercial bank, as well as PrivatBank Group, a global business coalition whose control extends across thousands of companies in virtually every industry from Ukraine, the European Union, Georgia, Russia, the United States and elsewhere. He denies having or needing influence over the President, but when the International Monetary Fund ended talks with Zelensky’s government after failing to reach a new lending agreement in 2019 (citing pervasive corruption) Kolomoisky, asked in an interview who would win if Zelensky was forced to choose between him and IMF loans, answered: “I would.” Ukrainian media has noted that Kolomoisky has not denied financing Zelensky’s campaign.
Kolomoisky built his enormous fortune atop PrivatBank primarily as a ‘raider’. In a story for Harper’s Magazine about Zelensky’s backer, Andrew Cockburn colored in the meaning of that term with the help of Matthew Rojansky, director of the Kennan Institute at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars. There are firms in Ukraine “registered with offices and business cards, firms [that specialize in] various dimensions of the corporate raiding process, which includes armed guys to do stuff, forging documents, bribing notaries, bribing judges,” said Rojansky to Cockburn. And according to Rojansky, Kolomoisky is “the most famous oligarch-raider, accused of having conducted a massive raiding campaign over the roughly ten years up to 2010.” At some point, he managed to end up on the United States’ visa ban list, prohibiting him from entering the country.
But the interests of the oligarch go well-beyond cutthroat business dealings, overlapping with Washington’s affairs in the region.
Between 2013 and 2014, the U.S. backed a color revolution in Ukraine that resulted in regime change. It also triggered a civil war between government forces and pro-Russian separatists in the eastern part of the country who declared independence from Kiev. Amid this crisis, acting President Oleksandr Turchynov appointed Kolomoisky governor of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. He turned his workforce into a private army to combat the separatists. Yet even as Kolomoisky morphed into a warlord, he did not neglect his business empire.
Washington-Approved Oligarch
In 2014, the IMF approved emergency aid to Ukraine and injected billions into the National Bank of Ukraine — the country’s central bank — to support local commercial banks. Through a globe-spanning scheme involving PrivatBank accounts and PrivatBank Group companies and a corrupt Ukrainian court system, Kolomoisky looted billions in IMF aid. The con, as revealed in a series of court judgments, was outlined as follows by Cockburn:
Forty-two Ukrainian firms owned by fifty-four offshore entities registered in Caribbean, American, and Cypriot jurisdictions and linked to or affiliated with the Privat group of companies, took out loans from PrivatBank in Ukraine to the value of $1.8 billion. The firms then ordered goods from six foreign “supplier” companies, three of which were incorporated in the United Kingdom, two in the British Virgin Islands, one in the Caribbean statelet of St. Kitts & Nevis. Payment for the orders — $1.8 billion — was shortly afterwards prepaid into the vendors’ accounts, which were, coincidentally, in the Cyprus branch of PrivatBank. Once the money was sent, the Ukrainian importing companies arranged with PrivatBank Ukraine that their loans be guaranteed by the goods on order.
But the foreign suppliers invariably reported that they could not fulfill the order after all, thus breaking the contracts, but without any effort to return the money. Finally, the Ukrainian companies filed suit, always in the Dnipropetrovsk Economic Court, demanding that that foreign supplier return the prepayment and also that the guarantee to PrivatBank be cancelled. In forty-two out of forty-two such cases the court issued the identical judgment: the advance payment should be returned to the Ukrainian company, but the loan agreement should remain in force.
During this period, Kolomoisky kept his portfolio of activities diverse. Twenty fourteen was also the year when then-Vice President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, reportedly joined the board of Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company to which Kolomoisky has been connected with a controlling interest, according to the New York Post. Emails obtained by the Post revealed that Vadym Pozharskyi, a Kolomoisky protégé, communicated with Hunter in 2015 about a meeting between Pozharskyi and then-Vice President Biden. Further, bank records of Hunter (lawfully obtained according to D&A Investigations) show payments made to him by PrivatBank.
By 2015, Kolomoisky was onto his next controversy, the one that would ultimately lead to Zelensky’s rise.
In March of that year, Kolomoisky’s men physically seized control of Ukrnafta, the largest oil and gas producer in the country, and UkrTransNafta, which controls virtually all oil pipelines in Ukraine. This was Kolomoisky’s way of showing his disapproval of the government’s timid reform efforts, which posed a direct threat to then-President Petro Poroshenko’s power. Poroshenko thus turned to Washington for help — namely, then-Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland and Geoffrey Pyatt, who was U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine at the time.
Nuland is an interventionist married to arch-neoconservative Robert Kagan. She’s been called “the architect of American influence in Ukraine,” was instrumental in regime change, and has served in every presidential administration except Trump’s since Bill Clinton’s days. People like Nuland are why presidents come and go, but interventionist foreign policy always remains.
With D.C.’s help, in exchange for him backing down, Poroshenko successfully removed Kolomisky from the visa ban list, among other things. Importantly, Pyatt and Nuland looked the other way on Kolomisky’s IMF scheme, even as Washington persecuted other oligarchs.
Meanwhile, at the same time that it ignored Kolomoisky’s corruption, the State Department attempted to extradite Ukrainian oligarch Dmitry Firtash for a bribery incident that allegedly took place in India. However, his real crime was holding ties to the government Nuland had a role in toppling as well as his association with deposed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. When Firtash appealed against his extradition, a European judge agreed and concluded that “America obviously saw Firtash as somebody who was threatening their economic interests.” Nevertheless, Washington has a long memory, and Firtash may end up standing trial in the U.S after all.
Even as he was removed from the U.S. banned list, Kolomoisky allegedly continued to embezzle and defraud PrivatBank of huge sums. Some of his schemes spilled over onto American soil.
According to the Justice Department, from approximately 2008 through 2016, Kolomoisky obtained fraudulent loans and lines of credit as part of a massive scheme totaling at least $5.5 billion, i.e. roughly equal to five percent of Ukraine’s gross domestic product at the time. In the U.S., millions of those dollars were allegedly laundered through commercial real estate purchases from Ohio to Kentucky and Texas. Furthermore, Zelensky’s benefactor allegedly purchased a dozen steel mills in small towns across America, leaving in his wake bankrupt factories, unpaid taxes, rotting buildings, and hundreds of steelworkers out of jobs.
By nationalizing PrivatBank in 2016, Ukraine effectively put the burden of a multi-billion dollar bailout on the shoulders of taxpayers.
The Servant of the People
Kolomoisky would have his revenge for what happened in his domain. The confrontation with Poroshenko, which was seen as humiliating for the oligarch, concluded in March 2015.
By October, the first episode of a new show, Servant of the People aired on Ukraine’s 1+1 channel, in which Zelensky played the leading role: a high-school history teacher who unexpectedly becomes President of Ukraine and is committed to fighting government corruption. 1+1 is owned by the 1+1 Media Group, one of the largest Ukrainian media conglomerates, whose owner, according to the Atlantic Council, is none other than Kolomoisky himself, giving him “significant political influence in today’s Ukraine. His media assets were used to promote the 2019 election campaign of President Zelenskyy, whose hit shows previously aired on Kolomoisky’s network.”
The Servant of the People series itself was produced by Kvartal 95, the company founded by Zelensky, whose partners were implicated in a network of offshores by the Pandora Papers. After Zelensky’s ascension, key figures of Kvartal 95 joined Zelensky’s administration. Ivan Hennadiyovych Bakanov, for example, went from head of the production studio to the leader of the Security Service of Ukraine under Zelensky.
The show literally created Zelensky’s presidential persona, effectively allowing him to build an unofficial campaign against the incumbent administration until March 2018, when a political party named after the television series was registered with the Ministry of Justice. In December 2018, Zelensky officially announced his presidential candidacy on 1+1.
Zelensky, the creation of an oligarch, campaigned for president as the character he played in a comedy series with a party named after the show to victory in 2019. During the race, Volodymyr Ariev, a political ally of incumbent President Poroshenko, posted a chart on Facebook claiming it showed how Zelensky and his television production partners were beneficiaries of a constellation of offshore firms which allegedly received millions from Kolomoisky’s PrivatBank.
The allegations were dismissed as baseless at the time, but the Pandora Papers revealed that information on several companies in the network corresponded with Ariev’s chart, the OCCRP noted.
Shortly after taking the reins, Zelensky and his Servant of the People party began firing, supposedly for inefficiency, Ukrainian ministers with reputations as anti-corruption reformers. Daria Kaleniuk, head of Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Action Center, told the Washington Post in March 2020 that the affair sent the message that Zelensky “can fire a person who takes a risk, for doing the right things, and blame this person for inefficiency.” Kiev-based reform reporter Oleg Sukhov echoed the sentiment last year, writing that “Zelensky has consistently protected corrupt officials from prosecution and killed anti-corruption reforms.” On the other hand, when faced with a petition calling for his dismissal, Zelensky refused to fire Oleh Tatarov, his deputy chief of staff, who had been charged with bribery.
The people put on the chopping block were also the ones most likely to threaten the power of oligarchs like Kolomoisky, from whom Zelensky may have learned a thing or two.
In a 2020 press conference, he remarked that he wanted to be “remembered as the president who built good roads in Ukraine.” One of the handful of construction companies that have received a significant share of state funds for building public roads during his tenure is PBS LLC, which is linked to Skorzonera LLC, a company co-owned by Kolomoisky, according to corporate records.
PBS has been accused by Ukrainian investigators of misappropriating millions in state funds for road work. A ruling by a court in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast noted that together with the Kolomoisky-controlled Skorzonera it is connected as part of a web of related business entities with overlapping addresses and personnel. PBS and Skorzonera had even sent their tax declarations from the same IP address.
Notably, former Customs Minister Maxim Nefyodov was one of the reformers fired by Zelensky. Nefyodov is most well-known for having created ProZorro, a system designed to tackle corruption in Ukraine’s public procurement sector.
After dismissing Nefyodov, Zelensky’s party used its majority to pass legislation that would allow the most expensive road construction project in modern Ukrainian history to be built with zero oversight, ProZorro exempt. Last June, the Kyiv Post reported how Zelensky “has doubled spending on road repairs, reaching into the pocket of the COVID relief fund and spending money Ukraine has won in international courts.” An interesting source of cash, considering that the IMF approved a multi-billion dollar aid package in 2020 “to help Ukraine to cope with COVID-19 pandemic challenges by providing balance of payments and budget support.” Is it possible that Zelensky has taken a page out of Kolomoisky’s book by taking liberties with international aid? It’s hard to say for certain.
Also unclear, is why the State Department decided to once again sanction Kolomoisky last March after he was taken off the bad list despite his own international scheming. In a press statement, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the reason was “due to his involvement in significant corruption.” But they were aware of that when they put him on and took him off the list the first time. Stranger still, Blinken specifically cited the years 2014 to 2015, when Kolomoisky “was involved in corrupt acts that undermined rule of law and the Ukrainian public’s faith in their government’s democratic institutions and public processes, including using his political influence and official power for his personal benefit.”
Again, this is not a revelation, considering that Nuland played a role in getting Kolomoisky off the list the first time during that period, back when Blinken served as Deputy National Security Advisor under Obama. Blinken didn’t even mention Kolomoisky’s alleged plundering in America.
Puppet of Intrigue
In 2019, just after Zelensky won his election, Kolomoisky signaled that he was prepared to pour oil over troubled waters and make peace with Russia. The civil war in eastern Ukraine has so far claimed more than 14,000 lives. The oligarch said it was enough: “They’re stronger anyway. We have to improve our relations,” he said about Russia and Ukraine according to the New York Times. But he also saw an obstacle: “People want peace, a good life, they don’t want to be at war. And you [Washington] are forcing us to be at war, and not even giving us the money for it.”
Did the U.S. sanction Zelensky’s patron, the way it did Firtash, to nudge him in the right direction?
In the latter case, the U.S. threatened to arrest Firtash for bribery to pressure Yanukovych into signing a trade deal with the EU. But the deal was, in reality, a ploy to destabilize Russia’s economy.
Despite being characterized as merely “pro-Russian,” Yanukovych, as The Economist explained, preferred “to preserve the status quo and refrain from joining either camp while continuing to milk [the EU and Russia].” And so the United States squeezed his friend to encourage Yanukovych to tilt in the desired direction. “If Yanukovych were to be persuaded to change his mind, threatening to put his sponsor Dmitry Firtash behind bars was a potent lever to apply,” wrote Cockburn. “Four days later, Yanukovych signaled he was ready to sign, whereupon Washington lifted the request to shackle his billionaire ally.”
But Yanukovych changed course and accepted a counteroffer from Moscow, a moment that became the flashpoint for a color revolution. Still Cockburn: “Street protests in Kiev followed, eagerly endorsed by Nuland, who subsequently distributed cookies in gratitude to the demonstrators.”
Yanukovych fled Kiev on February 22. Four days later, Washington renewed its efforts to arrest Firtash. “They duly did. Briefly imprisoned, Firtash posted the equivalent of $174 million bail and waited for a court to rule on his appeal against extradition.”
Whether something similar happened with Zelensky’s oligarch is another good question; likely one that won’t be answered anytime soon.
The Big Lie
The war has completely reinvented Zelensky, thus saving his scandal-plagued presidency marked by broken promises. As a Kyiv International Institute of Sociology poll showed, just 24 percent of voters supported him in late January. But now, thanks to the West’s embracement of the actor’s new persona which often places him beyond reproach, Zelensky has become the recipient of unqualified adoration and enormous amounts of international aid money. “Before the war the U.S. was sending $300 million per year to Ukraine,” said to NPR Mark Cancian, a senior adviser at the Center for International and Strategic Studies. “Now, we’re providing $100 million a day” to what was until recently considered “the most corrupt nation in Europe,” reports (of all newspapers) The Guardian.
As of today, the United States government alone is on track to deliver more than $50 billion in total aid to Ukraine. For comparison, the Department of Homeland Security estimated that Trump’s proposed border wall would cost roughly $21.6 billion. Republicans in particular, spent the first two years of Trump’s term resisting his efforts to fund and build the wall, before reluctantly agreeing to support just a fraction of what they approved for Ukraine at the drop of a hat, even challenging the patriotism of their critics.
What is the likelihood that those billions in international aid will vanish into well-connected pockets?
No one is asking these or any other important questions. Just like no one asked if it was odd when Zelensky stated that Russia would have to “kill all residents” in Ukraine’s capital to take it and get to him. That, seems the high price that the ‘servant of the people’ is willing to let Ukrainians pay; and one that Washington is happy to let Americans subsidize.
Several physicians like Dr. Christiane Northrup are concerned that there may be a lot more information about reproductive damage which has yet to be revealed. This comes off the back of a major peer-reviewed study revealing that menstrual irregularities and uterus shedding cases have spiked after the COVID vaccine rollout.
