Russian influenza in 1889-1891 was mainly treated with antipyrine, a new synthetic drug that lowered fever but often caused harmful side effects. Many deaths blamed on the flu might have been caused by the drug's toxicity, which doctors warned about at the time. This warning was forgotten, and the real cause of death was never fully questioned.
